A year-long investigation has resulted in an arrest.
In November of 2020, the Strathcona County RCMP received a complaint from an unnamed local business about an alleged data breach.
The detachments General Investigation Section (GIS), with the assistance of the RCMP’s Digital Forensic Services, were able to identify a suspect.
Alexander Strilets, a 57-year-old man from Edmonton, was arrested and charged with unauthorized use of a computer and mischief in relation to the computer data.
“Strathcona County RCMP want to take this opportunity to remind both businesses and the public alike to report any internet-related offences to police, and to be mindful of their business and home network security,” the RCMP wrote in a release.
