Strathcona County has decided on a spot for the proposed multi-use indoor fieldhouse.

The fieldhouse is meant to be an intergenerational recreation and activity centre that will host a variety of different sports. It was first proposed after determining from public input that indoor field space, gymnasium/court space, fitness tracks and multi-use program spaces were top development priorities for community recreation.

The county decided on a site located east of Broadmoor Boulevard on Buckingham Drive. The 18.3-acre site was chosen for its accessibility by transit and parking design, proximity to other community amenities and potential opportunity for facility and site expansion.

“We’re excited to move forward with a location offering great synergies for a vibrant sports tourism and events hub,” said mayor Rod Frank.

Currently, the proposed facility would be about two-thirds the size of Millennium Place. If approved as it is, the cost is estimated to be around $90-million.

Work on this project is still in the early stages. The next steps will be to progress with the design phase, determine a final budget, ask council for project funding approval, and continue exploring partnership opportunities.

A construction date has not been determined.
