A black bear took an early morning stroll through Bruderheim on Friday (May 14).

Around 5:30 a.m. this morning, residents reported the sighting along the creek on the west end of town; the bear disappeared over the train tracks soon after.

Black bears are commonly found throughout the province and generally prefer to avoid people, however, they can be seen in residential areas.

There are several ways to avoid a bear encounter in your neighbourhood:

- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Be visible and alert animals by making noise. A surprised bear might react aggressively to defend itself, it's young or a food source.
- Do not feed or entice wildlife, keep all outdoor bins secure.
- Give wildlife lots of space to move on from the area.
