Alberta will have a brand-new area code soon.
On April 23, 2022, area code 368 will be introduced gradually across the province. The introduction of the new area code results from a decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). It will help to meet the growing demand for new phone numbers in Alberta.
The first area code in the province, 403, was introduced in 1947. An additional area code, 780, was introduced in 1999 to serve Northern Alberta, while 403 was kept for the southern parts of the province.
Over time, demand for telephone numbers, particularly wireless services, created a need for additional area codes. Area code 587 was introduced in 2008, and in 2016, area code 825 was brought in.
“The introduction of a new area code creates millions of additional telephone numbers without affecting the existing numbers,” Kelly T. Walsh, program manager of the Canadian Numbering Administrator, said in a statement. “The new area code 368 will be added to the current area codes already in use in Alberta.”
Numbers with the new 368 area code will only be assigned to customers once there is no longer a sufficient supply of numbers with existing area codes.
